The Leadership Development Extension Certificate is for emerging leaders, professionals, and individuals who want to develop, update or strengthen their leadership skills. This program presents a leading-edge, comprehensive approach to developing your leadership abilities and performance.
Through the use of self-assessment tools, journaling techniques and an exploration of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, you will acquire insight into how to access and develop your leadership strengths. Learn how to gain the respect of others by becoming a leader with credibility; one who encourages better performance, higher levels of productivity and fosters teamwork within all levels of an organization.

We strongly recommend completion of Awakening Your Leadership Potential and Personal Leadership: Modelling the Way before registering in any other certificate courses.
Textbooks (Required):
There are both required and recommended textbooks for each course within the certificate program. Please review course material requirements following each course description. All textbooks are available for purchase at the BookStore. Additional course materials are distributed online via Blackboard.
Course fees include the cost of some self-assessment instruments and reports, including the Myers-Briggs® Type Indicator Instrument (MBTI®).
Earning Your Extension Certificate
Complete the six required courses, the Capstone Leadership Project, plus two optional courses (135 hours). The program can be completed in a minimum of two semesters or extended up to three years.

Awakening Your Leadership Potential
Be introduced to leadership fundamentals, including why leadership matters, what leadership means, who leadership is for and how leadership skills can be developed. Use widely recognized self-assessment tools, including the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and the Myers Briggs® Type Indicator (MBTI®) personality profile.

Personal Leadership: Modelling the Way

Explore your personal leadership values and use an EI self-assessment to identify new areas of strength and development as an emotionally intelligent leader. Discover how your daily actions require consistent practice and alignment with personal values in order to lead from a place of authenticity and integrity.

Interpersonal Leadership: Empowering and Encouraging Others
Exemplary leaders lead with influence and authenticity. They know how to build trust, create and strengthen important relationships, and develop others through mentoring and coaching. Explore the strategies and benefits of encouraging, inspiring, and bringing out the best in others through effective communication, employee development, and strengthening community through the celebration of values and victories.

Strengthening Team Leadership

Explore strategies for building a great team, including shared vision and purpose, leveraging the strengths of each member, and agreeing to accomplish the work of the team cooperatively.

The Leader as Culture Builder and Change Agent
Exemplary leaders use the power of shared vision and instill hope for a better future. Explore leadership and culture as two sides of the same coin, including the leader’s role in building high engagement and high performance cultures. Prepare and Present Capstone Leadership Project
Come together with your instructor for a three-hour prep class prior to starting your final project. Learn what you will need to do to succeed in your Capstone Leadership Project. At the conclusion of the semester you will meet again to present your findings to your instructor and classmates.
Note: You must take this class in conjunction with XLEA 10008 Capstone Leadership Project (see below).
Prerequisite: completion of all previous Leadership Development required and optional courses.

Capstone Leadership Project
Integrate the leadership framework, principles and tools acquired throughout the previous courses into your final applied leadership project. Select a real-life project or situation and apply the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.

Becoming a Strategic Leader
Strategic leadership is the ability to “think, plan, act, and influence in ways that promote the sustainable competitive advantage of the organization.” To be competitive, organizations must have effective leadership that promotes and practices strategic thinking.
