Funeral Director and Embalmer Certificate

The Funeral Director and Embalmer Certificate is designed to prepare you for an entry-level position in the funeral service profession and to meet the academic and internship requirements set forth by the Alberta Funeral Service Regulatory Board.

Tuition for the program is $8,585. Textbooks and course materials are an additional estimated $1,500.

Earning Your Certificate

Complete all 20 courses (1,800 hours) with a minimum grade of C for each course. Complete the program full-time/blended delivery OR part-time/online. In the blended delivery, complete embalming labs in Calgary every semester. In the online delivery, attend the Intensive Summer Institute in Calgary in June.

Our online courses are not independent study. They are facilitated by our instructors to guide you through an interactive learning experience at an accelerated pace. Online students can expect to complete all or a combination of the following: participation in virtual classrooms and discussion boards, individual assignments, online quizzes, and closed-book final exams.

Program Outcomes

• Plan, arrange and direct funeral ceremonies.
• Be considerate of and respond to various religious and cultural traditions associated with death.
• Interpret and apply various acts and regulations which govern the funeral service profession in Alberta.
• Communicate and work effectively with families, government, health and legal agencies.
• Practise the companioning aspect of caregiving.

Once you have been accepted into one of the Funeral Service certificates, you will have access to a comprehensive Funeral Student Resource Site. It has detailed information on how to register into individual classes, course expectations and much more. Information on how to access this site will be provided in your admission package.

Students participate in courses via online learning. Skill development labs, the Funeral Directing Practicum and Work Experience are completed off campus within a funeral home.
