Funeral Service Licensing

Licensing in the Province of Alberta

Mount Royal University’s funeral certificate programs have been approved by the Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board for licensing in the province of Alberta. To license in Alberta as a funeral director and/or embalmer, you must be sponsored by a funeral home in Alberta.

Licensed Funeral Director

To license as a funeral director in Alberta, you must successfully complete:

• Funeral Director Certificate
• Funeral Director Licensing Exam
• 1800 hours of logged funeral practice in the course of your education and work experience
• have participated in 25 funeral arrangements

Licensing requirements are subject to change at the discretion of the Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board.

To be employed in the funeral profession in Alberta, you must also have:

• police record check
• valid driver's license

Licensed Embalmer

To license as an embalmer in Alberta, you must successfully complete:

• Embalmer Certificate
• Embalmer Practical Exam
• have assisted in the arterial injection of at least 50 documented cases
• submission of 50 embalming logs
