Mr. Dornian has been the Director of the Mount Royal University Conservatory since April of 1992. The Conservatory is the largest program of its type in Canada and offers programs in Music, Speech, Arts and Theatre to approximately 5000 Calgary area students. It employs approximately 240 instructors at the Lincoln Park campus and maintains affiliations with another 50 instructors who teach in their own homes. Highlights of the program include 10 orchestras, four choirs, and a number of world class International Workshops and Shakespeare in the Park (which attracts audiences of approximately 40,000 people annually to Prince's Island). The Academy Program for gifted young musicians, features nationally and internationally recognized artists in residency programs and the Morningside Music Bridge brings the best young artist and faculty together from Canada, China, Poland and around the world.
Paul Dornian has made various contributions to the Calgary cultural scene in addition to his role as Director of the Mount Royal University Conservatory. As a clarinetist he is familiar to local audiences as both a soloist and chamber musician and has been featured on CBC Radio in both capacities. As a member of the chamber music group Aubade (with colleagues Marilyn Engle, Amanda Forsyth, and Edmond Agopian) he performed in a subscription chamber music series for nine seasons. As a participant in community activities Paul was a founding board member of the Calgary Arts Partners in Education Society – a group that championed using the arts to enhance the teaching of science, math and English in the Public School System. He also served on the Artistic Advisory Committee of the Honen's International Piano Competition and is currently a Board Member for the Canadian Music Centre, a non-profit organization devoted to the promotion of new Canadian music, as well as being a member of the Board of Directors for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
Paul's wife, Kathy Dornian, is an accomplished professional pianist and educator. The couple have twin sons, Patrick and Jonathan.
Mr. Dornian has a B.Mus. and a M.Mus. from the Cleveland Institute of Music and an MBA in International Business.
