Mount Royal University’s new Riddell Library and Learning Centre is key to the academic success of Mount Royal University students and to furthering our focus on exceptional teaching and learning informed by scholarship. The facility brings together services, expertise and information in a technology rich environment to inspire learning, exploration, and the creation and sharing of new ideas. 

The perfect integration of the digital and the physical, the Riddell Library and Learning Centre leverages both the power and reach of digital collections and services and the importance of the Library as a place where students and faculty can come together to learn and create.The facility provides exciting new learning and study spaces for students, a centralized hub for academic support services, fosters innovation in teaching and learning, and enables outstanding student and faculty scholarship.

The Riddell Library and Learning Centre was one of the Learning Spaces funding priorities during our Changing the Face of Education campaign. We successfully raised sufficient funds for construction. However, we have many additional opportunities available that support enhancements to the facility, and to the exceptional undergraduate educational experience that will be provided therein.

This stand-alone, four-storey building is located across from the Faculty of Arts building and adjacent to the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts, home of the Mount Royal University Conservatory and Bella Concert Hall; creating a vibrant “cultural corridor” on campus.

This innovative and inspirational facility has student learning and success at the heart of its design. The building will by nearly 16,000 square metres in total and will include the: 

The Riddell Library and Learning Centre more than doubles the current Library seating (~650 seats currently to ~1,800) and increases high-demand group study rooms ten-fold (from 3 to more than 30). The building is planned with the utmost flexibility to ensure long-term sustainability, consideration of a diversity of student learning and research needs, as well as evolving teaching excellence. 

It includes:

  • a state-of-the-art specialized instructional lab
  • technology enriched learning and creation spaces
  • expanded physical collection areas with an archive and special collections area
  • enhanced technological infrastructure
  • ongoing access to and support for growing digital collections.

The Riddell Library and Learning Centre is the academic nexus of the campus community and brings together expert staff, faculty and students in an information and technology rich learning environment to spark ideas and learning.

Design

Modern architectural design results in a unique and stunning building for the academic heart of the University. The glass envelope reflects that internal programming of the facility and functions to support LEED Gold requirements. Daytime views of the building offer an inviting intricacy to the modern design with evening and night views creating an illuminated beacon for the campus. The transparent design offers four floors of spectacular 360 degree inspiring views and natural light that fills the building. The choice of views includes iconic downtown Calgary, natural foothills and mountain vistas, a bustling central campus green space, and the beautiful new Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts. 

The Riddell Library and Learning Centre is located between the campus ring road and Richard Road, adjacent to the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts and across from the Faculty of Arts building.

The first floor of the Riddell Library and Learning Centre is designed to be a centre of activity and intellectual exchange, and a "one-stop-shop" for supporting academic success. Students will be able to: 

  • seek assistance from staff at an integrated services desk
  • use the extensive computer commons
  • learn in technology enhanced instructional labs
  • borrow the latest in mobile technology tools
  • participate in programs and events in our Ideas Lounge
  • engage with information on one of our new interactive visualization walls
  • make ideas tangible using the tools and equipment in the Makerspace
  • book one of the fully equipped group room
  • take a break and grab a coffee and bite to eat in the Café
  • or take advantage of our treadmill desks

Late night hours, community event facilities, displays and exhibits, along with informal gathering spaces complete the amenities on this floor.

Student Learning Services offices, training rooms, and peer tutoring services are located on this floor providing students with essential writing and study skill assistance. The Student Technicians and Resource Tutors (START) labs and supported media project rooms can be found here along with the Academic Development Centre, which supports faculty excellence in teaching and learning and technology integration. 

The second floor also offers a diversity of group and individual Library study spaces and specialized services including:

  • fully-equipped media project rooms;
  • recording/mixing rooms
  • a relaxing lounge reading area
  • more bookable group rooms and two presentation practice rooms;
  • data and GIS services;
  • the music collection;
  • and a "great reading room" for quiet contemplation and study
  • and ample group and individual seating with stunning views

To provide spaces that meet the needs of both studying and learning, the Riddell Library and Learning Centre is designed to become progressively quieter with each ascending floor. Along with the start of the Library’s print collection, this floor includes three sides of exterior Library seating; group tables, individual carrels, and comfy informal seating. The third floor also houses Mount Royal University’s Institute for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and the offices and purpose-built classrooms for the Department of Education

The third floor special features include:

  • cozy fireplace reading-lounge
  • small open workshop area
  • glassy workshop or small reading room
  • quick access collections (ESL, newspapers etc)
  • curriculum collection
  • children’s literature collection and reading area
  • a second traditional quiet reading room
  • more bookable group rooms
  • and an immersive (360) visualization room

The fourth floor includes the Library’s archives reading room and specialized collection storage, along with the continuation of the Library’s print collection. Library administration and other office areas can also be found on this floor. Designated as a silent and deep study floor, this level includes ample individual perimeter seating taking advantage of mountain, campus and city views. 

You will find:

  • a showcase space for displays, and highlighted collections
  • a 25–30 seat meeting room
  • archives and special collections reading room
  • inspirational views and a range of seating
