Open Studies at Mount Royal University
Explore Your Academic Options
Take courses that will help you choose your eventual program of study or pick up courses to meet admission requirements. Open Studies gives students interested in a flexible learning structure the freedom to explore different courses and program options.
Expand your knowledge and work toward further education by completing Grade 12 equivalent courses to meet admission requirements for a chosen program. Or complete courses that may be transferable to a Mount Royal baccalaureate degree or diploma program.
High School Upgrading
Open Studies students can also take Academic Upgrading courses. These non-credit, high school equivalency courses can be taken at the same time as university-level credit courses.
Open Studies students may take a maximum of 5 credit courses in a semester and complete no more than 30 credits (10 courses) before being required to choose a specific program of study. There is no limit to the number of non-credit academic upgrading courses.
We strongly encourage all new Open Studies students to attend a New Student Group Advising Session.
The specific prerequisites for all courses can be found in the course description section of the current Mount Royal University Calendar. Proof of successful completion of a prerequisite course must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar prior to the first day of classes. Failure to provide proof of successful completion will result in deregistration from that course.
Some courses at Mount Royal University are restricted to students in specific programs. Unless the restriction is for the program in which you are enrolled, you will receive an error message when attempting to register.
