Open Adult Program
Summer English Language and Culture Program

Improve your fluency and accuracy in speaking English through classwork and learning modules focusing on reading, listening, writing, vocabulary and more. Use what you’ve learned while studying Canadian culture in class and on field trips.

  • 4 week (72 hours)* program for adults (age 18+; not suitable for complete beginners)
  • Accommodation in MRU Residence (self-catering units)
  • English language class: Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 12:30
  • Classes organized according to speaking ability
  • Different themes studied each week
  • Cultural field trips and assignments on selected afternoons, 14:00 to 16:00
  • Assessment based on participation and completion of activities

Teaching English Language Skills
Improve your English language teaching skills for students of all levels. With lectures, tasks and presentations, you’ll discover new ways to teach reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary and grammar skills to K-12 students. As well, you will learn strategies for teaching large, multi-level classes and tips for motivating students.

  • 2 week (40 hours) program for K-12 English teachers (age 18+; not suitable for beginners)
  • Accommodation in MRU Residence (self-catering units)
  • The curriculum is planned around different topics, daily tasks and one final project
  • Events or field trips on selected afternoons and weekend
  • Assessment based on participation and completion of activities

Open Youth Program
Academic Preparation for EAL Students

Learn the skills you need for success in university. Students will be trained in educational tips and tools to successfully transition into university level academic learning while experiencing life on campus.

  • 2 week (40 hours) program for youth and adults (age 16+; not suitable for complete beginners)
  • Chaperones required: 1 chaperone for up to 7 students
  • Accommodation in MRU Residence (optional)
  • Events or field trips on selected afternoons and weekend
  • Academic English language class: Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 12:30
  • Cultural field trips and assignments on selected afternoons, 14:00 to 16:00

Daily Plan:

  • Academic English language class
    08:30-10:30: Focus on improving fluency and accuracy in a variety of speaking and writing tasks, e.g., giving presentations, group work and writing papers.
    11:00-12:30: Effective skills and strategies associated with university life and study, e.g. research techniques, using the library, referencing, networking on campus and social media
  • Cultural field trips and assignments

Canadian Business Communication and Culture Program

For groups of 12 or more people we will customize an English Language Canadian Business Communication course to your group’s specific needs. Practice and refine your language use while learning insights into Canadian business and culture. Enjoy in-class learning and assessment, guest speakers, field trips and more.

  • 2 week (50 hours) program for 12 or more business professionals
  • English language class: Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 12:30
  • Cultural activities/guest speakers: Monday to Friday, 1:30 to 3:30
  • Local outings and networking in community
  • Assessment and testing based on participation and completion of activities

Aspiring musicians are invited to spend their summer at the MRU Conservatory to study with esteemed faculty in the award-winning Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts. English language classes are integrated into the program.

  • 2-week program for school groups (age 13-17) or adults
  • Accommodation in MRU Residence
  • Chaperones required for youth program: 1 chaperone per 7 students
  • English language classes in the morning
  • Music instruction in the afternoons and evenings
  • Final gala concert
  • Certificate of completion based on participation, masterclasses and recital performance

Auditions are required. Prospective students need to submit a video introducing themselves and the music pieces they will be playing. The video should not exceed 10 minutes. Application and audition video must be received by June 1, 2017. Student admission is subject to MRU Conservatory selection committee approval. Acceptance notifications will be available June 15, 2017.

In this program, students develop their operatic skills through group learning, individual lessons and rehearsals with collaborative pianists. Masterclasses develop confidence and stage presence.
