A Calgary summer tradition is returning to Prince’s Island Park. After a brief hiatus in 2011, Mount Royal University’s Shakespeare in the Park will perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream daily at the inner-city park from June 27 to August 10, 2012.
In partnership with Theatre Calgary, Shakespeare in the Park will be celebrating its 25th season with a top-notch cast and crew, including students from Mount Royal’s Theatre Arts diploma program and Theatre Calgary professionals.
This year, the director will be Michael Shamata, the artistic director of Victoria’s Belfry Theatre, who is renowned for his outdoor productions of the Bard in Canada.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream will run from June 27 to August 10, 2012. Show times (weather permitting) are Wednesdays to Sundays at 7 p.m., with added weekend matinees at 2 p.m. (Note: no performances on June 30, July 1 and July 25 to 29, 2012).
Admission: pay what you can. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is suitable for all ages.
About the location
A natural gem in the heart of downtown, Prince’s Island Park has long been a hub for the Calgary arts community. Nestled on the south side of the Bow River, the park is the perfect setting for concerts, festivals and theatre productions.
There is plenty of seating available on the grass in front of the stage and the neighbouring Eau Claire Market has a number of food options. Dressing for rain or sun is recommended. Performances may be delayed in poor weather conditions but will only be canceled if there is a danger to the audience and performers.
