Department of Chemistry and Physics

Chemistry

Chemistry is the branch of science that studies the composition of the universe at an atomic and molecular level. Chemistry is often called “The Central Science,” because it is a key part of each of other science and technology fields, including biology, geology, physics, and engineering, and to the pharmaceutical and petroleum industries.
Branches of chemistry include:

  • analytical (what and how much)
  • biochemistry (the study of biological macromolecules such as proteins)
  • inorganic (the chemistry of non-carbon-based materials)
  • organic (carbon-based materials)
  • physical chemistry (the application of physics to chemical systems)

Because chemistry is such a broad discipline,  its knowledge is beneficial, and often essential, for any student in a science or technology-based discipline.

Physics

Physics is the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. Physicists and astronomers use experimental measurements and mathematical analysis to uncover the physical laws governing everything from the strange quantum world of subatomic particles, to the macro-world of planets, galaxies and the universe. Many of the technological inventions that we take for granted have resulted from theoretical and applied knowledge from physics.  Examples of these discoveries include:

  • transistors, lasers, CCDs (the digital “film” used in digital cameras and smartphones),
  • the production of Bose-Einstein condensates,
  • the realization that the universe is expanding outward due to an unknown form of energy called “dark energy",
  • the last “standard” fundamental particle - the Higgs Boson,
  • the discovery of thousands of exoplanets.
