OVERVIEW
Mount Royal continually seeks to develop and enhance its academic programs and scholarship.
To this end, it welcomes external funding from donors that will assist Mount Royal in fulfilling its
academic responsibilities and in serving its community.
The endowment of a Chair is an important event in the academic life of Mount Royal. It enhances
the academic purposes of the institution by providing continuing support for an established field of
study or by providing the focal point for a new emphasis or area of inquiry.
Often, where the endowment is the result of a benefaction, the Chair will honour a named individual
or organization.
B.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this Policy is to enhance the academic purposes of the institution by directing
external funding from donors for the establishment of an Endowed Chair, Executive-in-Residence
or Visiting Lectureship to support an established field of study or to provide a new emphasis or area
of inquiry.
C.
SCOPE
This Policy guides the establishment of Chairs, Executive-in-Residence and Visiting Lectureships
at Mount Royal. Compliance with University Policies and Procedures extends to all members of
the Mount Royal University community.
D.

PRINCIPLES
a.
From their inception, Chair Holders, Executives-in-Residence, and Visiting
Lecturers (appointees) shall be attached to a department, faculty, school, centre,
or institute of Mount Royal. Accordingly, the goals of the appointment shall be
consistent with those of the unit to which it is attached.
b.
Each Endowed Chair shall have terms of reference setting out the name of the
Chair, the purpose and objectives of the Chair, the qualifications required of
candidates or nominees, the term of appointment, the reporting obligations, and
the requirements for periodic review.
c.
The establishment of a Chair normally shall not be tied to the appointment of a
particular individual.
d.
Should Mount Royal wish to honour a donor(s) or at the request of a donor(s),
Chairs may formally be named.
In such cases, Mount Royal’s Philanthropic and
Honorific Naming Policy shall apply.
e.
Executives-in Residence and Visiting Lecturers may be appointed as Chair
Holders; however, Executives-in Residence and Visiting Lecturers may be
appointed without connection to an Endowed Chair or in the absence of Endowed
Chairs.
f.
Endowed Chairs may be discontinued by mutual agreement of the University and
the donor(s).
