PROCEDURES
1.
In the event that Security Services encounters any conduct on campus described in the
Policy, Security Services may issue notices and/or violation tickets under the Trespass to
Premises Act of Alberta (“TPA”) or the Petty Trespass Act of Alberta (“PTA”) of a duration
not exceeding 48 hours.
The TPA or PTA permits Security Services to effect an escort of
a violator from campus in instances where Security Services has issued a notice and/or
violation ticket.
2.
All TPA and PTA notices will be reviewed and approved by the Chief Safety. Risk, and
Employee Wellness Officer or designate.
3.
The issuing Security Services personnel will, in the issued notice and in their incident
reporting, articulate the conduct observed or complained of and the grounds for issuing the
notice and/or violation ticket.
4.
In exigent circumstances where it is not possible or practical to issue a written notice or
violation ticket, Security Services may issue a verbal notice under the TPA or PTA. This
provision will typically be used to provide a “cooling-off” period to de-escalate an incident.
Such verbal notices will not extend beyond 24 hours and will be accompanied by reporting
from the issuing Security Services personnel articulating the reasons for the notice.
Persons asked to leave for a “cooling-off” period will not be photographed.
5.
The Chief Safety. Risk, and Employee Wellness Officer or designate will be responsible
for assessing and directing the issuance of any TPA or PTA notices requiring prohibitions
from University Campus exceeding 48 hours.
6.
The Director, Security Services or designate, and the AVP of Student Success and
Experience, or designate, is responsible for the service of any TPA or PTA notices in
relation to non-academic misconduct outcomes as outlined in the Code of Student
Community Standards Policy.
7.
The AVP of Student Success and Experience may request the issuance of a TPA or PTA
through the Chief Safety, Risk, and Employee Wellness Officer. Once approved these
notices will be served by the AVP of Student Success and Experience or designate.
8.
The Director, Security Services or designate will annually review a summary of all trespass
prohibitions or restrictions, and will advise the Chief Safety. Risk, and Employee Wellness

Officer of the effectiveness of trespass sanctions, concerns, and areas for enhanced
procedure or policy.
9.
Security Services will not issue any form of trespass notice to individual residents of
University Residence.
10.
In the event of an incident involving individual residents of University Residence, the
Director, Residence Services or designate will explore alternative avenues to address the
conduct of the resident short of issuing a trespass notice. If such alternatives are
unreasonable or disproportionate to the conduct in the sole opinion of the Director
Residence Services or designate, the Director Residence Services or designate may
recommend the issuance of a trespass notice to the Chief Safety. Risk, and Employee
Wellness Officer.
