OVERVIEW
Access to Mount Royal University networks and the wider internet is made available to support
and facilitate the education, research and administrative functions of the University. All offices,
computer labs and the majority of classrooms on campus are wired for access to the network.
Wireless internet is made available to students and faculty (academic account holders)
throughout the campus in addition to our wired resources.
B.
PURPOSE
This Policy outlines the general rules all users of Mount Royal University's internet and network
access must abide by, and for certain specific user groups and their specific types of usage.
C.
SCOPE
Compliance with University policy extends to all members of the University community.
The Policy includes personal computers, laptops, tablets, cellular phones, other data and network
devices. However, this Policy focuses on academic and administrative users and is not directed
at residences which are covered by the Residence Network Acceptable Use Policy.

1.3
Access to electronic resources for all employees, students, and alumni is enabled
through user name and password provided to individuals according to guidelines
outlined in this Policy and all other applicable Policy guidelines.
1.4
Computing and communications facilities should be used in a manner consistent with
the policies and guidelines set forth by Mount Royal University. This includes but is
not limited to respecting the intellectual property, copyright and licensing rights of
other individuals, institutions and publishers.
2.
ELIGIBILITY
In order to use the internet and network access provided by Mount Royal University, a user
account registered with the University is required to log on to the network. Furthermore, an
academic account is required to use the Wireless Internet Access available throughout the
campus. Account holders bear the primary responsibility for the material that he or she
chooses to access, send, or display.
3.
BANDWIDTH
3.1
The campus network, including connection to the Internet, is a critical shared
resource for supporting the academic programming, student services and
administrative operations of the University. Uses of Mount Royal's Internet
connection that are central to the academic/administrative mission of the University
(e.g. access to Mount Royal University web site, email and the course management
system) will receive higher priority during times when classes are in session, offices
are open, and in the evenings when preparation takes place (i.e., critical times).
3.2
Low priority users, including recreational uses, are peripheral to our mission and will
receive lower priority during critical times. Information Technology Services places
controls on incoming/outgoing traffic allocating more bandwidth for institutional uses
(such as academic work).
3.3
Inappropriate uses of the University's technical resources including the network are
addressed in the Acceptable Usage of Computing and Communication Resources
Policy for students and for staff.
4.
PERSONAL DEVICE USAGE ON THE NETWORK
4.1
Personal devices owned by members of the Mount Royal University community that
access Mount Royal University's wireless internet available (Wi-Fi) must abide by this
Policy as well as the Acceptable Usage of Computing and Communication
Resources Policy.
4.2
Personal devices used on the network must possess up-to-date anti-viral software.
IT Services reserves the right to decide whether devices attached to the MRU
network are compliant with current MRU anti-virus standards. If personal devices are
deemed below Mount Royal University standards, then IT Services will disconnect
the device in question until the device meets the security standards. Repeated
failure of non-MRU computing equipment to comply with this procedure and other
MRU standards may result in a permanent ban of connectivity to the MRU network.
