A.
OVERVIEW
Mount Royal University names Tangible and Intangible Assets to recognize philanthropic support
received from individuals and organizations in the community, or to honour legacy contributions
from individuals who have had a pivotal impact on the history and evolution of the institution.
Naming is intended to support the University’s vision, mission and values, enrich campus culture,
and enhance the institution’s connection with the wide community it serves.

PURPOSE
To outline the types of naming opportunities and the principles and authorities for naming at the
University.

SCOPE
This Policy applies to all Philanthropic and Honorific Naming of University Tangible and Intangible
Assets.
D.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
NAMING OF TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE ASSETS
1.1
Tangible and Intangible Assets are available for Philanthropic or Honorific Naming,
including assets that may be developed in the future. An inventory of available assets
is maintained by the Office of the Vice-President, University Advancement.
1.2
Proposals for Philanthropic and Honorific Naming must be coordinated through the
Office of the Vice-President, University Advancement, which will consult with
affected units prior to naming an asset.
1.3
No Philanthropic or Honorific Naming will be approved (or, once approved,
continued) that is deemed to be, or have significant potential to be, detrimental to the
University’s academic and/or public reputation, the perceived value of its credentials,
or that
is not consistent with the University’s stated vision, mission, and values. Such

determination will be made by approval authorities as outlined in this policy and
related procedures.
1.4
Naming shall not imply endorsement of any partisan political or ideological position.
1.5
Naming is independent of all Mount Royal University operations and the
benefactor/honoree shall have no influence in the institution's affairs as a
consequence of any naming.
1.6
All Philanthropic and Honorific Naming proposals must include a defined duration for
the naming.
1.7
All Philanthropic and Honorific Naming proposals shall be undertaken in accordance
with relevant University policies, including (but not limited to) the Fundraising & Gift
Acceptance Policy.
1.8
Namings shall be rescinded if the benefactor fails to complete financial or contractual
commitments in accordance with a gift or sponsorship agreement, or if the
continuance of the naming is detrimental to the University per section 1.3 above.
1.9
Current members of the Board of Governors and Foundation Board of Directors,
current employees, and current holders of a political office are not eligible for
Philanthropic or Honorific naming, unless exceptional approval is granted by the
Board of Governors.
2.
AUTHORITY FOR NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
2.1
The Philanthropic Naming value of the Tangible or Intangible Asset to be named
shall determine the appropriate approval authority for the naming, as outlined in
Philanthropic and Honorific Naming Procedures.
2.2
In the case of an Honorific Naming, the comparable Philanthropic Naming value of
the Tangible or Intangible Asset to be named shall determine the appropriate
approval authority for the naming.
2.3
Board of Governors approval is required for Philanthropic and Honorific Naming for
donations over $1 million.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES
3.1
The Vice-President, University Advancement, is responsible for:
a. approving and maintaining standard operating procedures and guidelines
required for all Philanthropic and Honorific Naming opportunities, including
establishing criteria for all opportunities and proposed valuations;
b. coordinating proposals for all Philanthropic and Honorific Naming opportunities;
c. consulting with units on campus regarding all Philanthropic and Honorific
Naming Opportunities; and
d. reporting annually to the Board of Governors on all approved Philanthropic and
Honorific Naming in the prior year.

DEFINITIONS
(1)
Employee:
means individuals who are engaged to work for the University
under an employment contract, including faculty, staff, exempt

Honorific Naming:
means a naming that pays tribute to distinguished individuals
and/or organizations whose contributions to the community
and/or business have had a significant public impact; includes
recognition of historic contributions to the University
(3)
Intangible Asset:
means an asset of the University that is not physical in nature
(4)
Philanthropic
Naming:
means
a
naming
that
recognizes
individual
and/or
organizational gifts which have real or in-kind monetary value,
as determined by Mount Royal University
(5)
Policy:
means the Philanthropic and Honorific Naming Policy

Tangible Asset:
means a physical asset of the University
