A.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this Policy is to provide safety and security for all members of the University
community; to ensure compliance with applicable legislation; and to provide specific guidance and
direction on the possession and use of Weapons while on property under care, control and
ownership or direction of the University or at University events.
B.
SCOPE
Compliance with Mount Royal University policies and procedures extends to all members of the
University community.
C.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
GENERAL
Mount Royal University promotes the highest level of safety and security in all of its
activities. Accordingly, no person, while on property controlled or owned by Mount Royal
University (including Residence), shall store or carry a Weapon.
2.
AUTHORIZATION
Any University sanctioned activity, while on University property or otherwise representative
of the University, that may involve the use or display of a Weapon as defined by this policy,
must first be brought to the attention of the Director, Security Services or designate and
approved in writing prior to the use or display of the Weapon.
3.
EXEMPTIONS
Police Officers, Armoured Transport Personnel or any other individual legally entitled to do
so, may carry a Weapon on University property but only while performing their lawfully
prescribed duties.

4.
TRANSPORTING AND STORING WEAPONS
The transportation of any Weapon on or off University property or the storing of any
Weapon on University property must be carried out in accordance with the Procedure for
Transporting on/off or Storing Weapons on University Property. Additionally, if the Weapon
is a firearm, the transporting must also be in accordance with the Firearms Act.
5.
UNAUTHORIZED WEAPONS ON CAMPUS
5.1
Campus Security Services or the Calgary Police Service will seize any Weapons
found on campus for which there is no written approval.
5.2
Individuals found in possession of unauthorized Weapons on campus may be
excluded from University property under the Trespass to Premises Act pending an
investigation. Individuals may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including
expulsion from the University in the case of a student, under the Code of Student
Conduct or where staff is involved, termination of employment depending upon the
circumstances. Possession of unauthorized Weapons may also result in criminal
prosecution.

Weapon(s):
A Weapon is defined as a device or instrument inherently
designed to threaten, injure or kill another living being. This
definition also applies to anything that looks like a Weapon,
or is being used or threatened to be used as a Weapon. An
instrument or device that a reasonable person believes is a
Weapon will be deemed to be an actual Weapon and will be
treated as such under this Policy.
Weapons include, but are not limited to:
• Firearms
• Explosives (including fireworks)
• Pipe bombs
• Air, Pellet, BB, and CO2 guns
• Bows - all types, including crossbows
• Swords, excluding those permitted for the modern
sport of fencing
• Martial arts weapons
• Prohibited blades
• Hunting or fishing knives
• Brass knuckles
• Replica or imitation firearms (including props)
• Pepper, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), Bear Spray
• Any other restricted or prohibited device as defined
by the Criminal Code of Canada
• Replica or imitation of any of the above (including
props)
