A.
PURPOSE
This Policy sets out the parameters that govern the University’s Academic Schedule, including
semester dates and lengths and the number of instructional days to occur in each semester.
This Policy also sets out stipulations around courses with unusual start and end dates, reading
breaks, and examination periods.
B.
SCOPE
This Policy applies to all Employees who are engaged in establishing the University’s Academic
Schedule.
C.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
PRINCIPLES
1.1
All semester start and end dates are determined by the Registrar and are
submitted as part of the Academic Schedule to General Faculties Council for
approval.
1.2
A minimum of 60 instructional days will occur in a 13-week semester. A minimum
of 30 instructional days will occur in a 6.5-week semester.
1.3
Unusual start and end dates for a course must be approved by the applicable Dean
and Registrar prior to being scheduled.
1.4
All course work (assignments and examinations) must be completed within the
course start and end dates specified.
1.5
The final examination period includes business days and Saturday for Fall and
Winter semesters, and business days only for Spring and Summer semesters.
1.6
A minimum of one calendar study day will occur before the start of the final
examination period in any semester.
1.7
No examinations may be held, or assignments due, during study days.

2.
RESTRICTIONS ON FALL SEMESTER
2.1
The Fall semester will begin on the first Tuesday in September.
2.2
New Student Orientation will occur on the first two days of the Fall semester. No
classes will be scheduled on those days.
2.3
The Fall semester reading break will include the four days following Thanksgiving
Monday.
2.4
The Fall examination period will conclude no later than December 22
nd
. Under
exceptional circumstances and with approval from the Registrar, the Fall
examination period may be extended to December 23
rd
.
3.
RESTRICTIONS ON WINTER SEMESTER
3.1
The Winter semester will begin on the second business day following January 1
st
.
If January 1
st
falls on a Wednesday or Thursday, the semester will begin on the
following Monday.
3.2
New Student Orientation will occur on the first day of the Winter semester. No
classes will be scheduled on that day.
3.3
The Winter semester reading break will include the four days following the Family
Day holiday.
3.4
The Winter examination period will conclude no later than April 29
th
. No
examinations will be scheduled on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter
Monday.
4.
RESTRICTIONS ON SPRING SEMESTER
4.1
The Spring semester will begin on the first Monday in May provided that there is a
minimum of four calendar days between the end of the Winter semester and the
start of the Spring semester.
5.
RESTRICTIONS ON SUMMER SEMESTER
5.1
The Summer semester will begin on the first business day following July 1
st
provided that there is a minimum of four calendar days between the end of the 6.5-
week Spring semester and the start of the Summer semester. If July 1
st
falls on a
Wednesday or Thursday, the semester will begin on the following Monday.
6.
EXEMPTIONS FROM READING BREAK
6.1
In cases where there are demonstrable accreditation requirements, programs may apply
to General Faculties Council for a modification to the reading break outlined in the
Academic Schedule.
