A.
PROCEDURES
The purpose of this Procedure is to outline the process for the selection and appointment of a Dean
in the Division of Academic Affairs.
1.
SEARCH AND SELECTION OF A NEW DEAN
1.1
The Provost and Vice-President, Academic will inform the University Community
about the position of Dean to be filled and begin advertising the position.
1.2
The Provost and Vice-President Academic will form a Selection Committee with a
membership that is consistent with the Selection, Review and Reappointment of
Dean Policy.
2.
SELECTION COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP AND SEARCH PROCEDURES
2.1
Selection Committee Membership and Appointment
a. The Selection Committee composition varies by Faculty and is to be formed
with the composition outlined in Appendix A: Selection Committee of a Dean.
b. The Provost and Vice-President, Academic may appoint one or two members
to ensure balance, representation and equity.
c. Appointment of each person to the Selection Committee shall be conditional
on their agreement to maintain in confidence all of the information discussed
by the Committee and to exercise their authority and responsibility as an
individual such that decisions may be taken at the time and place of the
Committee meetings.
d. If the association of any members of the Selection Committee with Mount
Royal University, as defined above, is terminated or in any way significantly
altered, or if for any reason any member is unable to carry out their
responsibilities on the Committee, as defined herein, the Provost and Vice-
President, Academic may consider replacing that individual as a member.

2.2
Resources
The Associate Vice-President, Human Resources (or designate) will serve as a
resource to the Selection Committee.
2.3
Meetings
a. Meetings of the Committee will be held at the call of the Chair.
b. Quorum for meetings of the Committee will be at least half the members,
including the Chair. There shall be no provision for proxies, substitutes or
alternates.
c. Committee members should attend all interviews to participate in the
discussion of the recommendation. Recordings may be utilised to facilitate
the selection committee process.
d. The Committee shall advise the Provost and Vice-President, Academic on a
recommendation to make to the President.
2.4
Terms of Reference
a. The Committee shall solicit the views of the University Community regarding
criteria for the selection of candidates.
b. The Committee shall recommend criteria for the selection of candidates to the
President for approval, and the approved criteria shall be publicized in the
University Community.
c. Other actions to be taken are as follows:
i.
The Committee may retain a recruitment consultant to assist in the
search for the Dean.
ii.
The Committee and the consultant shall invite applications for the
vacancy.
iii.
The Committee, with the assistance of the consultant, shall establish
an acceptable long list of candidates.
iv.
The Committee shall shorten the list of candidates to the prime
finalists, and then, by whatever means it deems appropriate, rank the
desirable candidates on the short list and present to the President with
a recommendation of either the name of one candidate, or a ranked
list, for appointment as Dean. The appointment will be made by the
President.
v.
In the event that none of the candidates is deemed desirable by the
Committee or in the event that the President does not choose, or
succeed in the appointment of a candidate recommended by the
Committee, the search procedures described herein shall be
reactivated.

All discussions regarding the search and appointment of a Dean shall be carried out in
confidence.
4. APPOINTMENT OF A NEW DEAN
4.1
The President will make the appointment of a new dean on the advice of the Provost
and Vice-President, Academic.
4.2
The Provost and Vice-President, Academic, in consultation with Human Resources,
will negotiate and conclude a contract with the candidate approved for appointment
as Dean.
4.3
When the individual being appointed has a tenured position at another institution, the
Committee may recommend that the candidate be offered an appointment with a
tenured faculty position in an appropriate unit.
