A.
OVERVIEW
Mount Royal University is committed to high standards for Animal ethics and care and adheres to
the principle that in order for Animal-based research, testing or teaching activities to be justifiable,
they must have a reasonable expectation of providing a benefit to the health and welfare of people
or of Animals, or of advancing basic knowledge. To ensure that this commitment is maintained,
the University has established an Animal Care Committee to facilitate research compliant
with the Canadian Council on Animal Care guidelines and policies.
B.
PURPOSE
This Policy creates a research, testing and teaching environment in which animals are treated in a
humane manner and where the use of animals in research and teaching is minimized or replaced
with alternatives wherever possible.
C.
SCOPE
This Policy applies to all members of the University community who use or who seek to use Animals
for the purposes of teaching, testing or research.
D.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
GENERAL
1.1
The University is committed to providing humane treatment and care of Animals in
accordance with the standards and principles established by the CCAC. These
standards and principles will apply to all uses of Animals in teaching, testing, and
research.
1.2
No teaching, research or testing project involving Animals may commence without
prior ACC approval of a written Animal use protocol.
1.3
All teaching, research or testing projects involving Animals are subject to ongoing
monitoring by the ACC.

2.
RESPONSIBILITY
2.1
The Provost and Vice-President, Academic, has the sole authority regarding the
implementation of this Policy and the oversight of the
University’s Animal care
program.
2.2
The University will establish and maintain an ACC that will operate under Terms of
Reference guided by the CCAC Terms of Reference for Animal Care Committees
and approved by the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Academic.
2.3
Support for the ACC is provided by the Office of Research, Scholarship and
Community Engagement who will maintain a confidential repository of all
applications, decisions, minutes and other materials pertaining to the business of the
ACC.
3.
NON-COMPLIANCE
3.1
Animal use that has not been reviewed and approved by the ACC or ongoing Animal
use that contravenes this Policy will constitute non-compliance.
3.2
Non-compliance of this Policy may constitute research misconduct in accordance
with the Integrity in Research and Scholarship policy.

means non-human, living vertebrates and any living
invertebrates of the class cephalopoda, including free-living
and reproducing larval forms, as well some invertebrates with
highly developed systems as identified by the CCAC, used
for research, education or breeding purposes
