A.
PURPOSE
This Policy sets out the framework for the recruitment, appointment (or reappointment, if applicable
for the Vice-Presidents.
B.
SCOPE
This Policy applies to the Vice-Presidents, the President & Vice-Chancellor, members of the Vice-
President Search Committees and members of the Provost & Vice-President, Academic
Reappointment Committee.
C.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
TERM OF OFFICE
1.1
The term of office of the Provost & Vice-President, Academic shall normally be for a
period of up to five years, and may be renewed for an additional term of up to five
years. An individual would not normally serve for more than two consecutive terms,
but may be invited to do so. Any renewals for an additional term would be subject
to the reappointment process outlined in section 4.
1.2
The term of office of any other Vice-President will be established by that Vice-
President’s employment contract.
2.
SEARCH, SELECTION, AND APPOINTMENT OF A VICE-PRESIDENT
2.1
In the event of an upcoming or sudden vacancy in a Vice-President position, the
President & Vice-Chancellor (“President”) shall set a timeline, establish a budget for
the recruitment process in consultation with the Associate Vice-President, Human
Resources (“AVP, HR”), and initiate the recruitment process for a new Vice-
President.
2.2
The President has the authority to:
a. Lead the recruitment process for a Vice-President, select the successful
candidate and conclude employment contract negotiations;

b. Approve executive employment agreements for Vice-Presidents; and
c. Set performance goals for a Vice-President and conduct performance
assessments.
2.3
The President will establish a search committee that will operate under the Terms of
Reference approved by the President to advise on the search.
3.
REAPPOINTMENT OF THE PROVOST AND VICE-PRESIDENT, ACADEMIC
3.1
An incumbent shall normally indicate to the President, in writing, at least 18 months
in advance of the end of their current term of office that they wish to stand for
reappointment. If the incumbent chooses to stand for reappointment, the President
shall establish a Provost and Vice-President, Academic Reappointment Committee
that will operate under Terms of Reference approved by the President.
3.2
A comprehensive assessment shall be conducted upon receipt of an incumbent’s
written expression of intent to stand for reappointment that will build on the Provost’s
previous annual reviews and takes a broader review of the Provost’s performance.
3.3
The comprehensive assessment and reappointment of the Provost shall be carried
out in accordance with the Comprehensive Assessment and Reappointment of the
Provost Procedures.
4.
DISMISSAL OF A VICE-PRESIDENT
4.1
The President, by whatever means they deem appropriate, shall make all decisions
regarding the dismissal of a Vice-President or Acting Vice-President.
5.
APPOINTMENT, REAPPOINTMENT AND DISMISSAL OF AN ACTING VICE-PRESIDENT
5.1
The President, by whatever means they deem appropriate, shall make all decisions
regarding the appointment, reappointment and dismissal of an Acting Vice-
President.
