OVERVIEW
The emeritus/emerita designation is an award that recognizes the outstanding, distinguished
contributions of a retired individual to the academic life of Mount Royal University. As an award
that recognizes distinguished service, it is not bestowed automatically. It is bestowed by the Board
of Governors on the recommendation of General Faculties Council and the Mount Royal University
Honours Committee. Once granted, the title is held continually at the pleasure of the Board of
Governors of Mount Royal University.
B.
PURPOSE
To recognize retired faculty members for significant contributions and exceptional service during
their long-term association with Mount Royal.
To encourage and foster an ongoing relationship between an active teacher, scholar, or
administrator and the University after retirement so that the reputation of the University may benefit
from the continuing relationship and the recipient may benefit from using the University name in
the context of appropriate scholarly endeavours.

SCOPE
Compliance with University Policies and Procedures extends to all members of the Mount Royal
University community.
D.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
ELIGIBILITY
1.1
Individuals who have left the employment of Mount Royal University, normally
through retirement, and who usually have served the University for a minimum of
ten years may be nominated.
1.2
Only those holding an appointment as a tenured member of academic staff at the
time of their retirement, or in the case of academic administrators, those eligible
for such appointment on completion of the term of their administrative
responsibilities, shall be considered eligible for the emeritus/emerita designation.

2.
CRITERIA
2.1
The designation recognizes outstanding achievement in at least one of the
following areas: teaching, scholarship, and service.
2.2
When reviewing nominations, the University Honours Committee will take into
consideration both of the intents specified in Section B of this Policy. Evidence of
both intents will be considered as criteria for the award:
a.
Significant contributions and exceptional services during their tenure at
Mount Royal; and
b
Ongoing relationship with Mount Royal University following retirement.
3.
METHOD OF APPOINTMENT
3.1
The Mount Royal University Honours Committee will consider nominations at any
time for the Emeritus/Emerita title. Nominations must be in writing, include the
reasons for the nomination, and provide supporting signatures of three Mount
Royal University faculty members. Nominations must be submitted on the
“Nomination Form for an Academic Emeritus/Emerita Candidate.”
3.2
The Committee will consider all nominations and forward recommendations for
appointment to General Faculties Council and the Board of Governors for
approval. The Emeritus/Emerita designation will be announced at the regular
convocation of Mount Royal University.
4.
TITLES
Emeritus/Emerita status is granted with the title corresponding to the position held at the
time of retirement: e.g. Professor, Counsellor, Dean, Provost and Vice-President,
Academic, President Emeritus/Emerita, etc.
5.
TERM
The title is bestowed without definite term but the University reserves the right to revoke
the award in consequence of the violation of the University’s Code of Conduct.
6.
BENEFITS TO THE RECIPIENT
6.1
The recipient of the award can undertake or continue certain academic/
professional activities and maintain links with colleagues at Mount Royal University
and elsewhere.
6.2
The recipient of the award will be listed in official institutional documents. This
affiliation may provide benefits outside the institution, e.g. in terms of professional
activities with other organizations.
6.3
Privileges in addition to those provided by Mount Royal University to all retirees
could include:
a.
Name and designation included in the Mount Royal University Calendar.

b.
Name included on all departmental and university mailing lists and
invitation lists.
c.
Use of computer account with email privileges.
d.
Faculty library privileges, including inter-library loans.
e.
Use of Mount Royal University business cards with the emeritus/ emerita
title.
f.
Use of Mount Royal University letterhead and a Mount Royal University
address for academic purposes.
g.
Use of university-owned materials and equipment purchased with their
individual professional development allowances.
h.
Participation in campus seminars, colloquia, lectures, and special events.
i.
Eligibility to serve on Committees that would benefit from their knowledge
and experience.
6.4
The above-noted privileges and additional support related to specific duties may
be made available at the discretion of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic
on the advice of the Dean of the area or their designate. Such supports could
include the use of office space, the use of specialized facilities for research, the
use of office supplies, access to parking, access to telephone, fax equipment and
photocopying, and administrative support. These are not automatic privileges of
the title.
6.5
There are no formal duties and there is no remuneration associated with the title
of emeritus/emerita.
