SCOPE
The following procedures apply for the designation of Professor Emeritus/Emerita, Dean
Emeritus/Emerita, and Provost and Vice-President, Academic Emeritus/Emerita.
B.
PROCEDURES
1.
NOMINATION
1.1
Departments, organizational units or groups of individuals most closely associated
with the work of the Nominee may be Nominators for recipients of the Academic
Emeritus/Emerita designation.
1.2
Each nomination will include the supporting signatures of:
a. The nominator;
b. At least three employees holding a tenured appointment
i.
In the case of a professor, one of which must be the Dean of their faculty.
ii.
In the case of a Dean, one of which must be the Provost and Vice-
President, Academic.
iii.
In the case of a Provost and Vice-President, Academic, one of which
must be the President.
c. The nominee, indicating their willingness to be nominated and consent to making
the supporting documentation available to the University Honours Committee.
1.3
All nominations must be submitted to the Office of the Provost and Vice President,
Academic on the “Nomination Form for an Emeritus/Emerita Candidate” and must
include supporting documents that demonstrate an achievement in at least one of
the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service.
1.4
Nominations will also provide a description of the Nominee’s intentions to continue
their association with Mount Royal University.

1.5
Nominations will normally be made at any time within the first year of the Nominee’s
retirement or completion of their service.
2.
EVALUATION OF NOMINATIONS
2.1
The Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic will submit nominations to
the Mount Royal University Honours Committee.
2.2
The Mount Royal University Honours Committee will evaluate all nominations and
make recommendations to General Faculties Council for their consideration.
2.3
General Faculties Council will consider all nominations and make recommendations
to the Board for approval.
2.4
In making recommendations to the Board for conferring the honorary title of
Professor, Dean, or Provost Emeritus/Emerita, the following will be considered:
a. Exemplary service to the University;
b. Demonstrated capacity and willingness to continue to add value to the
University.
3.
BENEFITS TO THE RECIPIENT
3.1
The recipient of the award can undertake or continue certain academic/ professional
activities and maintain links with colleagues at Mount Royal University and
elsewhere.
3.2
All persons holding the title emeritus/emerita will receive the following privileges:
a. Use of Mount Royal University emeritus/ emerita title;
b. Name and designation included on the Mount Royal University Emeriti Recipient
List.
3.3
Professors, Deans and Provost Emeritus/Emerita will receive the following
privileges, in addition to the those provided to all retirees by Mount Royal University:
a. Use of computer account with email privileges;
b. Library privileges, including access to electronic resources and interlibrary loans
as per the library’s borrowing agreements;
c. Participation in campus seminars, colloquia, lectures, and special events by
invitation;
d. Serve on committees that would benefit from their knowledge and experience by
invitation.
3.4
Professors emeriti may be eligible as active researchers to serve as principal
applicants and, potentially as grant holders, if approved in writing by the AVP-
ORSCE on the recommendation of the Dean.
3.5
The emeritus/emerita title is honorific and does not carry with it any entitlement to
authority, rights or University resources. There are no formal duties and there is no
remuneration associated with the title of emeritus/emerita.

4.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARD
4.1
The designation “emeritus/emerita” will be conferred for Professors
Emerita/Emeritus at the regular convocation of Mount Royal University, and may be
conferred at convocation or in an alternative manner as determined by the President
for Dean Emeritus/Emerita and Provost and Vice-President, Academic
Emeritus/Emerita.
