OVERVIEW
Adjunct faculty are individuals whose appointment to the academic staff will enhance the
undergraduate or research programs of a Faculty or research unit and contribute to the intellectual
life of Mount Royal. Normally, adjunct faculty will be either fully employed elsewhere or retired from
such employment. They do not receive remuneration from Mount Royal for their duties as adjunct,
but may receive honoraria for occasional lectures, seminar presentations, and student supervision.
The title is recognized as an honour bestowed upon a scholar, professional or artist by Mount
Royal. These appointments therefore require the approval of the Provost and Vice-President,
Academic.
B.
PURPOSE
To foster a relationship between external academics or professionals and Mount Royal, providing
benefits to teaching, research, the reputation of the institution and the reputation of the individual.
C.
SCOPE
Compliance with University Policies and Procedures extends to all members of the Mount Royal
University community.
D.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
ELIGIBILITY
Individuals with professional qualifications (academic, professional experience or the
equivalent) are eligible for adjunct status. This includes individuals currently employed by
Mount Royal.

2.
METHOD OF APPOINTMENT
Adjunct designation is a department-driven process as outlined in the associated
procedures document. The department makes recommendation to the Dean, who
recommends to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic.
3.
TERM
The appointment can be for up to five years and is renewable. Terminations within the
appointment period shall be by mutual consent or by request of the Department Chair or
the individual.
4.
DUTIES
The duties of each adjunct faculty member shall be set out in their letter of appointment.
In their capacity as adjunct faculty, individuals may not act as course instructors. This does
not preclude teaching in the form of special or guest lectures, or as seminar discussants.
5.
PRIVILEGES
5.1
Adjunct faculty may use their association with Mount Royal for the purpose of
external applications for funding, but such funds must be administered by Mount
Royal and the use of such funds must be governed by the same regulations as
apply to regular faculty research.
5.2
Adjunct faculty will have access to the onsite Library resources during the term of
their appointment on the same basis as other faculty members.
5.3
Adjunct faculty will not normally have voting rights within Departments and
Faculties. They may serve on Mount Royal committees, with voting rights, when
clearly outlined in letters of appointment or upon the subsequent approval of the
Dean of the Faculty.
5.4
Adjunct faculty will receive no remuneration for their duties but may receive
honoraria for occasional lectures or seminar presentations. In this capacity, adjunct
faculty are not employees of Mount Royal.
5.5
Appointees shall be accorded a title that is in accordance with current faculty titles
in use (e.g., Adjunct Instructor). Appointment of adjunct faculty does not imply that
the appointee has the qualification necessary for regular academic designation.
Because the professional qualifications, experience and reputation of individuals
appointed as adjunct faculty will vary considerably, there is no equivalence
between adjunct and regular titles.
