A.
OVERVIEW
The emeritus/emerita designation is an award that recognizes the outstanding, distinguished
academic and leadership contributions of an individual to the advancement of Mount Royal
University. As an award that recognizes distinguished service, it is not bestowed automatically.
B.
PURPOSE
To recognize tenured faculty members and other leaders for significant contributions and
exceptional service during their long-term association with Mount Royal, at the time of their
retirement or completion of their service to the University.
To encourage and foster an ongoing relationship between an active teacher, scholar, or
administrator and the University so that the reputation of the University may benefit from the
continuing relationship and the recipient may benefit from using the University name in the context
of appropriate scholarly endeavours.

SCOPE
Compliance with University Policies and Procedures extends to all members of the Mount Royal
University community.
D.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
ELIGIBILITY
1.1
Only those holding a tenured faculty appointment at the time of their retirement, or
leaders on completion of the term of their appointment, are considered eligible for
the emeritus/emerita designation.
1.2
Individuals may be nominated following the conclusion of their employment or
appointment at Mount Royal University, normally through retirement or conclusion of
a term of service and who usually have served the University for a minimum of:
a. Ten years for tenured faculty; and

b. One complete term for Deans, Provost, Presidents, Board Chairs and
Chancellors
2.
TITLES
2.1
Eligibility for Emeritus/Emerita status applies to individuals who have served in the
following roles: Professor (tenured), Dean, Provost and Vice-President Academic,
President, Chancellor, and Board Chair.
2.2
Where an individual has held more than one role at the University, the
emeritus/emerita title will be granted at their preferred level of service.
3.
CRITERIA
3.1
The designation recognizes outstanding achievement in at least one of the following
areas: teaching, scholarship, and service.
3.2
When considering nominations for recommendation, the decision making body will
take into consideration both:
a. Significant contributions and exceptional service during their tenure at Mount
Royal University; and
b. Ongoing relationship with Mount Royal University following retirement or
conclusion of a term(s).
4.
METHOD OF APPOINTMENT
4.1
The Board of Governors has approval authority for all emeritus/emerita designation
decisions.
5.
TERM
5.1
Once the title is granted by the Board of Governors it is continuous.
5.2
The University may revoke the title of emeritus/emerita with the approval of the
Board.
