Social Work Diploma

Be an advocate for those in need and start changing the world one person at a time. The two-year Social Work Diploma program gives you the theory and practice you need to make an impact in the lives of those at risk. With practicum opportunities in Calgary and abroad, you will work with diverse groups, equipping you for a rewarding career in a challenging field. Graduates are also eligible to become a registered social worker through the Alberta College of Social Workers.

Theory into action

You’ll get extensive hands-on experience starting in your first year, working with single mothers, people who are homeless, children at risk, recent immigrants, the elderly, young offenders and others.

You will gain knowledge and practice in a variety of social work skills, including:

  • conducting assessments and environmental scans
  • goal setting planning
  • setting up interventions
  • supportive counselling with individuals, families, groups and communities

Career choices

Graduates may be employed in a range of government, nonprofit and private agencies. The demand for graduates is high and continues to grow. In Alberta, the job market for social workers is expected to increase by 3% to 4% a year. Your job title could be:

  • Social worker/counsellor — help people who are experiencing various challenges in their lives. You could work in schools, hospitals, clinics, government agencies or for nonprofit organizations. You might work with people who are struggling with addictions, poverty, conflict in relationships, parenting difficulties, eating disorders, physical or mental illness or a myriad of other issues.
  • Community worker — help build stronger communities by recognizing needs, completing community assessments and helping people acquire the skills necessary to create sustainable resources that enhance the quality of life for everyone.

Further education

Graduates may also pursue a Bachelor of Social Work at many universities across Canada, including the University of Calgary, the University of British Columbia, Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops and the University of Regina. Some universities in Australia also offer Bachelor of Social Work degree completion for Mount Royal diploma graduates.

Gain international perspective

You will have the opportunity to study and work abroad through partnerships established with leading institutions in England, Mexico and New Zealand. International study is a great way to gain greater understanding and perspective.
