Enhance your English language proficiency in Calgary
Learn English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) at Mount Royal University helps students develop strong English language skills for academic success and career opportunities. Whether you want to prepare for university, improve your communication skills for the workplace or meet English language proficiency requirements, LEAP offers expert English classes taught by TESL-certified instructors.
LEAP is designed for both domestic and international students who want to strengthen their English language proficiency for academic, career or personal growth. The recommended minimum language level for success in the program is CLB 4 or an IELTS score of 3.5.
LEAP courses develop essential English language proficiency skills, including:
- Speaking and listening for clear and effective communication
- Reading and writing for academic and professional settings
- Grammar and fluency to refine your language use
- Pronunciation and comprehension for confidence in English-speaking environments
Program structure and LEAP levels
LEAP consists of four levels, from low-intermediate to advanced, with placement determined by a language assessment test. Each level of LEAP is completed over a 13-week term. Your overall time spent in the LEAP program is determined by the level you begin at. For example, if you start at LEAP 1 it will take 15 months (four 13-week terms) to complete the program.
Students in LEAP 3 and LEAP 4 can register for MRU Academic Upgrading and Open Studies courses. Successful completion of LEAP 4 meets MRU’s English Language Proficiency Requirement for degree, diploma and certificate programs.
