Mount Royal responds to Feb. 24, 2022 Provincial Budget
Feb. 24, 2022
Mount Royal University values its strong relationship with the Government of Alberta and will continue to work with the Ministry of Advanced Education for the benefit of Alberta learners.
MRU's Campus Alberta base grant was reduced in Budget 2022 by 1.9% which equates to $1.7M, a slight improvement over what was reflected in the Province's past three-year funding commitment. While budget cuts are always difficult, the predictability of this year’s reduction has allowed us to plan for the upcoming fiscal year. Grants for students with disabilities and other funding will be maintained. We are also pleased to see Capital Maintenance Renewal funding support restored to historical levels of $3.6M for MRU.
MRU has received significant cuts to its provincial grants in recent years, and did our part to improve efficiency, reduce costs and develop other sources of revenue. MRU (and the Alberta post-secondary system generally) currently performs well with respect to cost and other metrics compared to other provinces.
Advanced education is key to Alberta’s economic recovery, and we welcome this budget’s re-investment in the form of targeted funding to increase enrolment in programs needed to increase access to advanced education and support the economic recovery. We look forward to working with the province on what opportunities this funding presents for MRU and our future students.
