Statement on passing of Dr. David Taras

We are deeply saddened over the death of Dr. David Taras, professor in Communications Studies and the Ralph Klein chair in Media Studies at Mount Royal University.

David believed deeply in the value of democracy and was well known across our campus community, the city of Calgary, the country and internationally as a leading expert in the area of Canadian media policy and its relationship to Canadian identity and democracy.

Through a distinguished career that also included positions at the University of Calgary, David’s research, writing and teaching on media, politics, new technology and its impacts on our democratic systems enlightened and informed students, his colleagues and peers, and the public through his timely and insightful scholarship and media appearances.

A kind and generous mentor to colleagues and students, past and present, David will be profoundly missed by our campus community.

A memorial service will be held at Beth Tzedec Synagogue on June 13 at 11 a.m. The service will also be live streamed. After the visit to cemetery, a reception will be held at Beth Tzedec Synagogue.
