Message to our MRU community

As the Israel-Hamas war continues, we recognize the deeply personal nature of this conflict for many members of our Mount Royal University community, including students, faculty and staff and those with direct ties to the region. We continue to extend our sincere sympathies to all those affected by these terrible events.

We also know this has led to heightened tensions on campus. While the conflict impacts us all in different ways, we have a shared responsibility for each other. That means acting with kindness and compassion and approaching difficult discussions and communications around the war, and the history and issues behind it, with empathy and respect.

A university is a collection of voices and Mount Royal makes room for a variety of views, even when there is disagreement. Free speech and academic freedom are fundamental to our mission. However, free speech on a diverse campus requires that each of us speak carefully, thinking about how words may be understood, including by those with backgrounds unlike our own. As always, we will not tolerate hate, violence, threats, abuse, discrimination, targeting of specific groups or individuals, racism or harassment.

Please know that we remain committed to maintaining our culture of well-being while continuing to work together to create a safe, secure, healthy and inclusive community that is so important to all of us.

We invite you to read more about campus safety, security, and how the MRU community is approaching one another with respect for our shared humanity.

Sincerely,

Tim Rahilly, President and Vice-Chancellor
