Crowchild Classic takes over the 'Dome Jan. 31
Fans will pack the Scotiabank Saddledome later this month for the annual Crowchild Classic! The hockey doubleheader between MRU and U of C is borrowing a page out of the Friday Night Lights playbook and will go down at the Saddledome on Friday, Jan. 31.
Whether you are a Crowchild Classic newbie or have a few under your belt, there’s some key details to know before you go. Most importantly, it is vital to understand just how intense this rivalry can be. The Crowchild Classic has been happening at the 'Dome for a decade now but it goes beyond hockey. Cougars basketball, soccer and volleyball teams also face off against our rivals in red during their respective seasons; the university that wins the most games across all sports wins 'The Medal,' a 68-kilogram cast-iron City of Calgary manhole cover (not to mention bragging rights).
Here’s what you need to know before you go:
The important stuff
The Saddledome doors will open at 3:30 p.m. with puck-drop at 4:30 p.m. for the first game on Jan. 31. You will need a ticket to enter the Saddledome. They’ll be on sale for $5 starting Jan. 8. Remember that the ‘Dome has a no re-entry policy, so once you are in, you are in for the night. Backpacks are not allowed so make sure to leave those at home.
You’ll need a debit or credit card if you want to buy a snack as the Saddledome is cashless. Happy hour prices will be in effect for pizza, popcorn and hotdogs.
Plan a safe ride to and from the game with Calgary Transit. Limited parking is available for $10-20 per vehicle.
Tickets
It’s so important we’re mentioning it twice: you will need a ticket to get in! Tickets sell out fast but you can secure yours starting Jan. 8 using this link (maximum of eight tickets per order). Tickets are only available online. Proceeds from ticket sales are split between the two universities and will go towards student wellness initiatives.
Seating and dress code
There’s no dress code per se but we want to see your school spirit! Break out your best blue and avoid red. There’s deals on Cougars gear on now at the Cougars Campus Store. If you don’t make it there before the game, the campus store will be set up on the concourse at the Saddledome. There will also be a limited number of free MRU noisemakers and stadium horns available on game day on a first-come, first-served basis for fans who really want to make some noise and show their MRU spirit
Once you’re game ready, tag us in your posts on social media and use the #WearetheCougars, #CrowchildClassic. Keep an eye on our instagram stories as we will be sharing some of your posts!
Saddledome ushers will be on hand to direct you but the MRU fan zones will be sections 110-119 and 213- 226. Sections 120, 109 and 212 are neutral zones and family friendly.
Seating is general admission and first-come first-serve so get there early to get the best seats in the house.
If you cannot make it in person the games are going to be available on a pay-per-view live stream/on-demand at canadawest.tv.
Tuition contest
One lucky student will leave the game with some tuition money for the 2024/2025 school year (worth $5,000). We won’t spoil too much but you will need to be there in order to win.
Record breaking crowds
The men’s and women’s hockey games are easily the Classic’s most popular event, breaking U Sports attendance records. Last year more than 10,500 fans rocked the Saddledome.
Fan conduct
The rivalry is intense and we like to engage in some friendly back and forth but ultimately we want everyone to have a safe and fun time. Students are expected to follow Mount Royal’s Student Code of Conduct. Go Cougars!
Calling all future Cougs!
Maybe they are too young to officially join a Cougars hockey team but if you have a young player in your life who wants to join the Cougars for the pre-game skate, sign up here. Skaters will be randomly chosen and notified via email.
Watch dreams come true
Playing at the Saddledome is a big deal for many players and it’s made possible thanks to the support of the Calgary Flames and Flames Foundation. Be sure to look out for your favorite Cougars on the new Jumbotron at the NHL facility.
