Black History Month 2025
The Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at MRU recognizes that Feb. 1 marks the start of Black History Month. Black faculty, staff, students and alumni have played an instrumental role in shaping Mount Royal’s history and community. We will continue celebrating them both on campus and off, and we’re confident in the future we are building together.
The theme for this year’s Black History Month is "Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations." Black legacy is not just about honoring the past—it is about actively shaping the present and creating pathways for future generations. At MRU, we are committed to fostering an environment where Black leadership, participation and mentorship thrive. True equity is achieved not only by acknowledging history but by ensuring Black voices are included in decision-making structures and that emerging leaders are supported and empowered. This year’s theme calls us to celebrate the contributions of Black Canadians while strengthening our collective commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable future.
While the month is a time to educate and celebrate, we acknowledge that it was created in response to anti-Black discrimination, racism and hate. We affirm our commitment to the collective effort to end all forms of anti-Black racism, and encourage our campus community to attend Black History Month events throughout the month.
