Ghost-hacking: How to protect yourself from scams from beyond the grave of those you knew

As people pass away, the number of Facebook profiles of the dead will soon surpass those of the living. This is too enticing for criminals to ignore. In a technique called ghost-hacking, attackers take over the accounts of the deceased and use them to send spam and phishing emails, in order to access other accounts and collect personal information.

Secure your deceased relative's account by memorializing it and then deleting it. If you do keep the account, use strong passwords, enable MFA, monitor for suspicious activity and use anti-virus software.

If the account is hacked, change the password, check bank and credit-card statements, place a fraud alert on the credit report, and report any breaches.

‘Tis the season to be wary: 12 steps to ruin a cybercriminal's day

Scammers like to take advantage of busy shopping times like Christmas. The most common threats to watch for are fake sellers, account takeovers, fake online stores, fake apps, phishing emails and fake gift cards. To protect yourself from these attacks:

Use multi-layer security software and unique passwords
Beware of too-good-to-be true offers and pop-up ads
Only shop on secure sites and pay by credit card
Try to limit shopping to brands you trust
Don't shop online when connected to public wifi
If possible, shop as a guest rather than logging in
Download apps from a trusted source and think before clicking on email links

Criminals use web scrapers to pull your personal information from publically available data on websites like LinkedIn. Using this method they can compile a list of your company's employees, identify potential suppliers and find potential partners. Threat actors use this information to create believeable phishing emails that easily trick you into clicking on a malicous link. You can make the attackers work harder if you:

Configure your privacy settings
Limit the information in your profile
Be cautious of accepting friend requests
Review your connections regularly
Post profile updates with caution

Cybersafety tip of the week

How to spot a fake data blocker that could hack your computer in seconds

Data blockers, also known as USB condoms, block attackers from accessing your device through a charging cable. Some crafty threat actors have started handing out free fake data blockers at the airport. These devices are actually collecting data, not blocking it. They can be spotted by looking at the USB pins. A real data blocker is missing the middle two pins and has a cut out that says no data. A fake data blocker has all four pins intact and is missing the cut out.

Google has changed Chrome’s lock icon

The lock icon that was located in the address bar of Chrome indicated that your traffic to and from a webpage were encrypted. That was useful before most webpages began encrypting their traffic. Now it is rare to find a webpage that isn't encrypted. As a result, the lock icon has been replaced with a "tune" icon. Clicking on the "tune" icon gives you easy access to privacy and security settings. Chrome hopes that this will encourage people to check their settings more regularly.

Having the basic security steps in place like enabling a firewall, having strong passwords, enabling MFA and using antimalware is not enough. Make sure you also encrypt your data, back up important data, save recovery codes and know where the reset button is on your device.

Don’t call it quishing: QR code phishing on the rise

Scammers are sending out emails that appear to come from Microsoft and other organizations that contain QR codes. The emails encourage you to scan the QR code to set up multi-factor authentication. When you do so, you are sent to a fake login page.

To avoid becoming a victim, check the URL for the QR code. If you enter your credentials into a fake site, close the account/application on all your devices before you reset your password. This kicks the attacker out of your account/application so you can regain control of it.

Fake friends and followers on social media – and how to spot them

Social media is a haven for scammers. Their favourite technique is to use bots to manage fake accounts that spam you with offers, send clickbait and entice you into a romance scam. You can spot these fake accounts by looking for the following:

Odd bio with stilted language
Stolen profile pic - search for the image on Google to find out
They follow a lot of accounts but have few following them
A friend asking you for money - their account may have been cloned
Direct messages offering deals
No official badge or checkmark
Random comments out of context
Too good to be true offers
Posts are in clusters and are sporadic

Practical Ways to Prevent Your Home Security Cameras From Being Hacked

Both DIY and professionally installed home security cameras are vulnerable to cyberattack. They can be attacked locally when the attacker is within range of your home network. However, they are more likely to be attacked remotely. Typically access to your security camera is gained by taking advantage of password reuse and software vulnerabilities. While slow or decreased camera performance can indicate it has been compromised, it can be very difficult to determine if it has been hacked. You can prevent attacks by:

Using cameras from reputable manufacturers
Using cameras with high-level, end-to-end encryption
Changing the default password on your camera to one that is unique, long and difficult to guess
Updating the camera firmware as soon as updates become available
Using multi-factor authentication to protect your camera

To stay ahead of the criminals, watch for unsolicited messages and links, question anything that is too good to be true and be careful about sharing personal information.

If you click on a phishing link with your MRU device, disconnect from the Internet and call the IT Service Desk at 403-440-6000. If you click on a phishing link with your personal device, get off the hook by doing the following:

Do not provide the attacker any further information
Disconnect from the Internet
Run a malware scan
Consider a factory reset
Reset your passwords
Contact your bank
Contact the authorities
Contact your service providers
Look for changes to your accounts
Look for unrecognized logins into your accounts
Alert your contacts

Eight character passwords can be hacked in minutes. Secure passwords require 12 characters, if they are generated by a password manager and 20 characters if you generate them yourself. To easily create a password this long start with 4 random words, capitalize one letter in each word, separate the words using a special symbol and add a number to each word.
