Nov. 12 – 16, 2024

Métis Week celebrates the culture, history and contributions of the Métis people. On November 16, Métis people pay tribute to Louis Riel by holding a commemorative ceremony on the date of his execution. In addition to recognizing Louis Riel Day on November 16, the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) has declared the week surrounding November 16 as “Métis Week.” The week is devoted to commemorating the strengths and sacrifices of the Métis who continue to strive toward rights and recognition as a distinct nation.

To commemorate Métis week, a series of events to celebrate the culture and history of Métis People will be hosted at Mount Royal University. The events seek to increase the representation and affirm the validity of Métis knowledge on our campus, provide a venue for Métis students, faculty, and staff to connect with, share, and feel pride for their unique culture, and contribute to our ongoing commitment towards decolonization and Indigenization.

In honour of Alberta Métis Week, visit The Confluence for an intimate one-day exhibition that offers a glimpse into the personal life of Louis Riel through authentic letters and diaries.

The collection includes letters between Riel and his close family members, as well as Riel’s personal diary and a written account of the trial that found him guilty of treason and led to his execution on Nov. 16, 1885. Riel was the founder of Manitoba and leader of the Métis resistance against the Canadian Government.
