Senior Lecturer, Journalism

Patricia Edgar is a senior lecturer in the School of Communications Studies. Her students have won several awards for projects created in her classroom, including the Canadian Association of Journalists CAJ Student Award of Excellence (2020, 2018, and 2017), MRU Faculty of Business and Communications Student Research Days Award (2019, 2022, 2024), and the Emerge Media Award for Multimedia Production (2020 and 2018). She also mentored teen journalists through the Alexandra Writers Centre.

Ms. Edgar worked as a journalist for CBC News for a decade, pioneering online newsgathering and production. A cross-platform project she helped create won an Alberta Film and Television Award. Prior to joining CBC, she worked as a daily news reporter for the Ottawa Citizen and the Winnipeg Free Press. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. Her recent non-fiction writing has appeared in the literary journals such as The Dalhousie Review, Queen's Quarterly, The Antigonish Review, Grain, FreeFall and Prairie Fire, as well as the anthology Waiting (University of Alberta Press, 2018).

Her middle-grade novel Anna Analyst (Yellow Dog, 2020) was called a “droll, deftly executed debut” by Kirkus Reviews and recommended by CM Reviews and the Canadian Children’s Book News. She also helps judge magazine awards through the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association and the International Regional Magazine Association.
