Age-Inclusive Symposium 2023
Supporting lifelong, age-friendly teaching and learning

The annual Age-Inclusive Symposium will address the shifting social structures of an aging population and generate an interdisciplinary response to create an age-friendly community at Mount Royal University.

About

Ageism can affect people of all ages but is often overlooked in conversations around diversity and inclusion. Discrimination based on age can lead to exclusion, bias, and unfair treatment in society leading to negative effects on mental health, career limitations, reduced productivity and innovation, and even increased healthcare costs. By addressing ageism as part of EDI strategies, institutions and organizations can create a more inclusive environment that values diversity, promotes intergenerational collaboration and creates opportunities for students and employees to thrive.

Event details

How does ageism fit into EDI?

Ageism is often overlooked in equity, diversity and inclusion strategies, even though it is one of the most prevalent forms of prejudice and stereotyping. Join us as we discuss how to address ageism and contribute to a more supportive and thriving community.

Moussa Magassa, PhD

Associate Vice-President, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Like our ethical responsibility to embed anti-racism principles and values in all systems and structures of our organizations, we must think of our focus on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) as not a burden or something that pits ‘us’ and ‘them,’ but rather, as a gift of humanity we give to one another as human beings. A community founded on the values and principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, anti-racism and anti-oppression benefits us all, regardless of our individual or social differences
