The Indigenous Hawai'i Field School 2018
The Indigenous Hawai'i Field School critically engages students with Aloha ʻĀina and activism on the Big Island of Hawai'i. We will introduce Kanaka Maoli Indigenous sovereignty, literature, history, music, and non-fiction as well as volunteer for several community work days, giving back to the land. Students will also have the unique opportunity to engage with community elders, local scholars and knowledge keepers about the oral and written materials. We will experience living with the land, securing food sovereignty, asserting political and cultural sovereignty and maintaining and revitalizing language amid a tumultuous political history on the Big Island. The course will be co-taught by Dr. Renae Watchman (Mount Royal University) and Dr. Robert Alexander Innes (University of Saskatchewan).

Program DatesIn Hawai'i: May 21, 2018 - June 9, 2018
Pre-departure Classes and Preparations: Participants will commit to monthly group pre-departure meetings/classes beginning in January, 2018.
Final assignments will be due by June 15, 2018.
Course Credits
Participants will be enrolled in the following two courses for a total of 6 MRU credits:
- INST 2720 - Travel Studies in Indigenous Studies (3 credits)
- GNED 3301 - Experiencing Communities & Societies (3 credits)
This field school is open to all MRU students.
Interested students should meet with their academic advisor to ensure they have the necessary pre-requisites and confirm their ability to use the two courses for credits in their specific program prior to joining the field school. Note that INST 2720 only has recommended preparation.
Application Process
Access the Field School Application Form.
Submit the following to the Office of International Education (EB 3021) prior to the application deadline:
- The completed Field School Application Forms.
- A one-page Statement of Purpose describing your interest in being part of this opportunity.
Following departmental assessment, successful applicants will be notified to proceed with deposit payment. The initial deposit must be paid at time of acceptance in to the program.Application Deadline
Complete applications are due to the Office of International Education (EB 3021) by 4:30 pm on Wednesday, November 15, 2017.Program Costs
Hawaii Field School Program Fees - $2,760
The Hawaii Field School Program Fees include: accommodation in Hawai'i, local transportation (excluding airport transfers), faculty expenses, MRU administration fee, activity/entrance fees and contingency. Program fees are payable in person at the Office of the Registrar (A101) according to the payment deadlines outlined in the table below.

*Initial program deposit is non-refundable and secures the participant's place in the program. Possibility of refund of subsequent deposits due to withdrawal from the program will be assessed and determined at the time of withdrawal. Program fees to do not include course tuition.
MRU Tuition & General Fees
MRU tuition and fees for INST 2720 (3 credits) and GNED 3301 (3 credits) are in addition to the program fees and will be assessed to each student's account in April, 2018. They are payable to MRU by the spring 2018 fee payment deadline.
Additional Student Expenses
Students are responsible for all additional expenses not included in the program fees such as return airfare to Hawaii, trip interruption and cancellation insurance, travel health and medical insurance, passport, immunizations (if required), meals, airport transfers, travel essentials, personal spending, etc. Estimates of additional student costs are available at the Information Session(s) listed above and from the Office of International Education.Contact InformationDr. Renae Watchman
