Mehdi (Nader) Dehghany obtained PhD in Physical chemistry at the University of Calgary with emphasis on structural determination of gas phase clusters/molecules, using laser spectroscopy techniques. The main focus of his PhD program was constructing a supersonic jet-cooled apparatus to generate high-intensity pulsed molecular beam of van der Waals (vdW) clusters using magnetic valve with slit nozzle, under ultra-high vacuum condition. The optical compartment of this apparatus and computer-controlled data acquisition system was capable of recording high-resolution infrared absorption spectra of vdW molecular clusters (ro-vibrational spectra with FWHM about 0.002 cm-1 at few kelvin). With special focus on binary and ternary van der Waals clusters of Nitrous Oxide (N2O), his PhD focus was extended to carbon dioxide clusters (CO2), up to 13 monomers bonded, as well as Carbonyl sulfide (OCS) clusters.

He then joined Devon Research Center (Natural Resources Canada) as a post-doctoral fellow. At this research laboratory, the focus was hydrocarbon characterization of oil well samples using various spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, Raman, Phot-Acoustic FTIR, Phot-Acoustic Direct absorption). He also developed a source-compensated Photo-Acoustic spectrometer using CW Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL), resulting in considerable improvement in observation and assignment of vibrational modes of large hydrocarbons compared to conventional FTIR. This technique can be readily expanded to other wavenumber regions.

He has co-authored over 37 peer-reviewed articles in various scientific journals such as the Journal of Chemical Physics (JCP), Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics (PCCP), Molecular physics, the Journal of Physical Chemistry A, Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy, The review of scientific instruments and the Journal of Biomedical Optics.

He has also personal and professional mandate to engage in science education, fostering a positive learning environment in and out of his lectures with a strong appetite for implementing new educational technologies and methods.
