Dr. D. Megan Gillies joined the Department of Chemistry and Physics at MRU in July of 2024 as a Physics Laboratory Instructor. She is currently teaching lab components for the first- and upper-year physics courses. These include Phys 1201 and 1201 (Classical Physics I & II), Phys 2201 (Acoustics, Optics and Radiation), and Phys 3601 (Quantum Mechanics).
Main areas of scholarly interest and expertise:
Megan Gillies is passionate about space physics, with a focus on the aurora - natural light displays in the Earth’s night sky. Her work involves studying the interactions between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere, which contribute to these mesmerizing phenomena. Megan is particularly interested in how these interactions affect the dynamics of the Earth's upper atmosphere and the implications for space weather forecasting. She is also highly invested in applying machine learning techniques to analyze large data sets, advancing the field of space weather prediction. Beyond her scientific research, Megan is dedicated to outreach and educational programs, aiming to inspire broader audiences with her enthusiasm for auroral physics and physics in general.
