What is PCI?
The Payment Card Industry (PCI) is governed by the PCI Security Standards Council to enhance payment card data security.

- Founded in 2006 by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, Mastercard and Visa Inc.
- Develops standards for handling, processing and storing payment card data to help ensure its security and prevent thieves from stealing it or card holder data (CHD).
- Standards are detailed in the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). They are summarized in the PCI At a Glance, Standards Overview.
- The current version of the PCI DSS is 3.2.1.
