Social Connection at University

Many people enjoy spending time with those they care about, but did you know that social connection is essential for your overall well-being? Individuals who feel socially connected often experience improved physical and mental health outcomes. Taking time to engage with friends, and classmates can offer a sense of belonging and create a network to support the challenges of student life. By staying connected, you're not only improving your mental well-being but also building a foundation for flourishing in both your academic and personal life. This feeling is contagious and mutualistic. When we have a network of connections to support us we have more space and resources to support those around us building a community of care.

What brings you joy?

Reflect on the qualities, activities and elements of your life that you enjoy about yourself or that bring you joy. Brainstorm spaces where you might be able to find people with shared values.

Joining clubs that align with your interests  can be a great way to meet these people. If there are no clubs that align with your interests, challenge yourself to try something new, if it is not for you there is no need to continue.

Become a regular

Become a regular somewhere! Commitment to regularly attending the same fitness class, studying in the same location, or grabbing coffee at a consistent cafe.

It can take time

Do not get discouraged if friendships do not form right off the bat. It can be vulnerable to put ourselves out there and initiate a conversation with someone new. We might want something to come of that connection right away. Keep in mind that meaningful relationships take time and trust that they will develop.

Challenge yourself

Challenge yourself to say hi to the person sitting next to you in class. If it feels easier to begin the conversation by asking about course content you could initiate the conversation this way. Remember there is never any obligation to continue the chat but you never know where it could go!
