Mount Royal’s new Bachelor of Aviation Management degree
What does the new BAM degree offer?
Mount Royal launched a new four-year Bachelor of Aviation Management degree to start in Fall 2024.
There will be three admission routes into aviation at Mount Royal:
- Aviation diploma
- Bachelor of Aviation Management — Direct (First-year) entry — new
- Transfer credits are available (up to 60 credits) for MRU Aviation Diploma graduates
The MRU Bachelor of Aviation Management (BAM) is a direct-entry four-year degree that provides the opportunity for a rewarding career in the aviation sector with two separate concentrations: Flight Crew Operations and Aviation Operations.
Flight Crew Operations offers optional flight training, including Private Pilot Licence, Commercial Pilot Licence and Multi-Engine Instrument Rating, to prepare students to be professional pilots while also preparing for management opportunities as their career develops.
Aviation Operations focuses on a greater development of management skills and specific aviation business content. Students will learn about complex issues affecting global operations, including economic and environmental sustainability, financial operations, logistics and best practices for managing people and processes in the aviation industry.

Is Mount Royal suspending admission intake into the Aviation diploma?
No, Mount Royal plans to retain the Aviation diploma program.
When does the degree program start? When can I apply?
The new degree will begin in the Fall 2024 Semester (September 2024).
The application period is open now. We plan to accept the first group of 40 students into this degree for the Fall 2024 Semester. The application will remain open until Mount Royal has received applications from a sufficient number of qualified applicants and the program is declared full.

What specific courses are required for admission into the BAM degree program?
All applicants must meet both the MRU general admission requirements and any program-specific requirements. Mature and post-secondary admission categories do not require the additional three Group A, B or C courses.

Will the BAM be recognized by universities across Canada if I wish to pursue graduate or professional studies?
Yes. As a member of Universities Canada (UC), Mount Royal degrees are recognized by all universities in Canada.
Mount Royal University is one of only two Canadian institutions recognized by the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) for excellence and quality in aviation teaching, student achievement, curricula, academic support and other criteria.
Information for prospective Mount Royal BAM students
Can I apply to the BAM for Fall 2024?
The application will be open on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024 (8:30 am MST). The early admission period will end on Friday, March 1, 2024. Admission is competitive and applicants with higher admission averages will be considered first. If there are still seats available after early admission, applications will continue to be accepted based on program availability until Aug. 31, 2024, or the program has been declared full.

Why should I choose the BAM degree versus the Aviation diploma?
When compared to the Aviation Diploma, BAM offers a more comprehensive education that covers a wider range of subjects, including advanced management skills, aviation law, finance and global aviation practices. Graduates are well-equipped with a holistic understanding of the industry and are ready for a variety of leadership and management roles that span from the runway to the boardroom.
BAM also includes the option to complete the final two years of the program through online, asynchronous learning. This gives students the flexibility to begin working while they complete their degree.

What are the admission requirements for the BAM?

What will the new BAM cost?
Tuition and fees for a full course load (five courses per semester for one full academic year — September to April) are approximately $8,900 (based on the 2024–2025 academic year tuition fee schedule), and the cost of books and supplies is estimated at $1,500 for the first year.
Approximate costs for optional flight training in the Flight Operations stream are $22,000 for the Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and $71,000 for the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (Multi IFR). These values are based on national averages.

Are scholarships and financial aid available?
Yes. A variety of student awards and financial aid opportunities are available to students who qualify.
The Alberta Air Access Bursary was established to encourage students to enter high demand aviation programs to help meet future labour demands and strengthen the economy in Alberta.
Does Mount Royal have on-campus housing?
Yes. Living in Residence is a convenient way to get the most out of your post-secondary education. Units are fully furnished and situated minutes away from a wide range of Mount Royal facilities and services.
Information for MRU Aviation diploma students and graduates
Can I apply for the BAM degree if I am currently in the Aviation diploma?
Students currently enrolled in the diploma will be eligible to apply for direct entry following graduation and be eligible for up to 60 transfer credits.

Why should I complete the diploma before applying to the BAM?
With a completed diploma, Aviation Diploma graduates are eligible to begin their career in the aviation industry. This contributes to employability and gives the option of working after completing your diploma before continuing to the BAM.
