1. Where did you do your internship while in MRU Journalism?
Mobile Magazine
2. Knowing what you know now, what advice would you have liked to give yourself as you started your internship?
I've completed three internships in the media industry in total, and the best advice I have is to work harder than anyone in the room. Go the extra mile, no matter the task, and always ask for more assignments.
3. What is something that really stands out when you think about your time at MRU Journalism?
The close relationships with faculty. I'm still in touch with many of them and love hearing about what the journalism program is up to.
4. What is something you might wish to forget about your time at MRU Journalism?
Nothing - even the hiccups made me grow.
5. How transferrable were the skills you acquired in your education?
Very. In each job I've had since graduation, I've utilized my researching, interviewing, writing, editing and time management skills that I honed at MRU.
6. In your career, what type of work has most excited you, and why?
When I get to tell stories that bring awareness to an underreported issue. I've talked to people who view something in a new way after reading one of my stories. I strongly believe journalism is a force of good that can help people see the world in a new way and reflect on their biases. You hear so much about "fake news" but reporters work so hard to bring the public balanced and accurate reporting.
7. What is the most important but unwritten rule that you’ve learned on the job?
Make things easier for the people who come after you. There's a big lack of mentorship in most workplaces, and it makes a huge difference in someone's career when you take the time to coach them.
8. Who has most inspired you along the way, and why?
I look to my friends who are killing it in their fields, whether it's comms, content marketing or journalism. Their advice and support means so much.
