The following are the pre-practice requirements needed for nurses working in clinical practicum.

Registered Nurse Practice Permit

A current practice permit or courtesy permit for the location of the clinical practicum is required. If a courtesy permit is needed, please plan accordingly, as these can take 2 to 6 months to obtain.

Experience

Before commencing the clinical practicum, evidence of 1-year FTE acute medical/surgical experience (within the last 3–5 years) is required. If you do not meet this requirement, a letter to support how you meet this requirement may be considered.

The 1-year FTE requirement allows the student to develop the foundational skills to be successful in the clinical practicum.

Note: This acute care experience is not a requirement to enter the program; it can be accumulated while completing the theory courses.

Mask Fit Testing

As a prerequisite for acute care clinical practicum, all students must be fitted with N95 masks in accordance with the health authority’s policy where the clinical practicum will take place. Evidence of mask fit testing is to be provided to the Instructional Assistant, and students must have proof of their mask size with them for practice experiences. All costs associated with this service are the student's responsibility if it is not already covered by the health authority where the practicum occurs.

Immunization

Proof of up-to-date immunization status is required for all professional practice courses and is the student's responsibility, along with all associated costs. Failure to maintain a current immunization status will result in immediate withdrawal from the clinical practice area and may result in a failing grade.

C.P.R. Health Care Provider Certification

Students must provide proof of current "C.P.R. — Healthcare Provider level C” Certification. Evidence of certification is required before enrollment into a clinical-related course. All associated costs are the student's responsibility.

Police Information Check

Provincial legislation requires that students in publicly funded agencies, including hospitals, seniors' lodges, group homes and nursing homes, are subject to a Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check. A local police check is required before enrollment into a clinical-related course. All associated costs are the student's responsibility.

If a student is denied a clinical practicum due to a criminal record identified by a police check, the student will be unable to meet course requirements and will be required to withdraw from the program. Refer to the statement regarding Police Information and Other Background Checks in the Mount Royal University Calendar.

Further requirements specific to the clinical practicum location will be communicated directly to the student after acceptance to the clinical experience.

Additional Requirements
