Mount Royal’s new Bachelor of Social Work degree
Mount Royal launched a new four-year Bachelor of Social Work degree to start in Fall 2021.
There will be three admission routes into social work at Mount Royal:
- Social Work diploma
- Bachelor of Social Work — Direct (first-year) entry — new
- Bachelor of Social Work — Post-diploma (for graduates of an Alberta Social Work diploma program) — new
The MRU Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is a direct entry four-year degree that offers a generalist approach to social work practice. The option to pursue advanced study within a concentration is available. Courses in social work practice, theory, policy, and research are grounded within contemporary theoretical frameworks, including decolonization, Indigenous ways of knowing, anti-oppressive practice, and strengths perspectives. The BSW will prepare students for practice with individuals, children and families, groups, and communities in complex social settings.
The curriculum for the new Bachelor of Social Work consists of the following:
- 26 Social Work core courses including:
- 3 practica
- 2 interprofessional courses
- 1 Indigenous Studies course
- 10 General Education courses
- 4 electives
Students will learn in a variety of settings: classroom lectures and tutorials, experiential labs and more than 750 practicum hours in community agencies.
Apply for Mount Royal’s new Bachelor of Social Work.No. Mount Royal plans to retain the Social Work diploma program.
The new degree will begin in the Fall 2021 Semester (September 2021).
The application period is open now. We plan to accept the first group of 35 students into this degree for the Fall 2021 Semester. The application will remain open until Mount Royal has received applications from a sufficient number of qualified applicants and the program is declared full.

These are the course requirements with minimum grades only; admission is competitive and all MRU general admission requirements must be met.

The program has been awarded pre-accreditation status from the Canadian Association for Social Work Education.
