Policies
The following policies outline the various aspects of program development:
- The Curriculum Approval Policy for Ministry Approved Programs lays out the approval process for new Ministry-approved credentials.
- The Program Definitions Policy explains the principles that inform the development of its programs and the academic criteria that certificate, diploma, and baccalaureate degree programs must satisfy.
- The Academic Program Quality Assurance Policy provides an overview of the quality assurance processes in place at Mount Royal as they pertain to Ministry approved programs.
Prior to developing a new program proposal, it is strongly advised that the members of a program development team review the above policies.
Procedures
All newly proposed programs of study must receive approval from Provost's Council. Provost’s Council will signal approval to the academic quality assurance coordinator. At which time the Letter of Intent (LOI) development process will commence with identified faculty leads and the academic quality assurance coordinator.
The development of the Letter of Intent is the responsibility of the academic unit proposing the new program. The dean of the faculty will assign a faculty member to lead the development of the program proposal. The academic quality assurance coordinator will support new program development by ensuring the process meets institutional quality assurance standards and providing guidance and advice on best practices for writing the LOI. Additional support from the academic quality assurance coordinator may include:
- Assisting with the procedural elements of developing new program proposals
- Liaising with members of OIRP on the provision of data required to support proposals
- Overseeing the workflow of new program proposals through the relevant institutional approval bodies
- Facilitating communication with relevant provincial units as needed
