Teaching Statement:

My approach to teaching is grounded on what I denote “active empathy”, that is, underpinning the instruction method on a subjective examination of the way students acquire, process, and assimilate information. I believe teaching is vastly enriched, more relatable, entertaining, and ultimately more effective, when the instructor ponders on questions like, “Why is this student struggling to understand this new concept but feels comfortable with the previous ones?” “What are students supposed to get from this slide/this example/this assignment?” “What triggered that confused look/that sigh just now?” Being receptive to students’ vocal and silent feedback informs the trial-and-error process by which a lesson is perfected.

To facilitate students’ learning process and class-taking experience I rely on being approachable, respectful, kind, and willing to provide guidance. My classes include many opportunities for participation which I leverage both to incite and retain student engagement and to build student confidence.
