How Do I Choose Which Provider to See?
When to See a Counsellor?
- I want a safe space to talk through things going on in my life that are weighing on me
- I am overwhelmed and want help to manage the stress and figure out how to cope better
- I am going through a tough time and need support with various challenges, such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, relationship issues, academic stress, addiction and/or other personal struggles
- I need support during a difficult life transition, like a move, a break up , or pending graduation
When to See a Mental Health Nurse?
-
I want to know how to be assessed to see if I have a mental health diagnosis.
- I want to see a doctor to help manage my mental health
- I want to see a doctor to help manage my mental health medications
- I want to find on and/or off campus resources to support my mental health
- I am experiencing symptoms that I think are related to my mental health and don't know what to do
- I want to know how to be refered to a psychiatrist
When to See Both
In some cases, you might benefit from both therapy and medication. Our counsellors, mental health nurses and physicians/psychiatrists often work together, with counselors focusing on talk therapy and physicians and psychiatrists handling diagnosis and medication management. For instance, if you have moderate depression or anxiety, therapy can provide coping skills while a physician or psychiatrist can provide a diagnosis and may manage any necessary medication.
