Dr. David Aveline is of Quebecois/British ancestry, was born in London, England, spent most of his life in Quebec, and has been an associate professor of sociology since August 2003. In his 20s and early 30s, he had a variety of jobs including ditch digger, security guard, farm hand, racetrack groom, underground miner, theatre usher, hotel desk clerk, and shoe salesman. At age 33, with only a high school education, David decided to pursue sociology. He achieved a B.A. and M.A. from Concordia University in Montreal and a Ph.D. from Indiana University in the United States. After five years at the University of Cincinnati, David returned to Canada to join Mount Royal University's faculty.

Although David's interests are diverse, his main areas have been Queer Studies and Human Sexuality. He has studied under well-known sex researchers Fran Shaver of Concordia University, and Martin S. Weinberg and Colin J. Williams at Indiana University. David is currently working on a co-authored textbook on human sexuality and has done research on the symbolic meanings of "safe sex," interactions of sexual orientation and race in Canada, the lives of parents of gay men, and a theoretical analysis of men seeking sex with other men. Theoretically, David favours the micrological frameworks of symbolic interaction and phenomenology, and methodologically he favours interviewing and narrative analysis. He teaches courses in human sexuality, the sociology of the body, and nonconformist behaviour. David has also taught sociology of the family, youth and society, the sociology of religion, crime and social control, young offenders in Canada, and organizational psychology.
