Admission requirements

Mount Royal has a general admission policy that applies to most undergraduate (credit) programs. Each program also has specific admission requirements. Please ensure you are familiar with both the general and specific admission requirements for the program(s) you select. In addition, all applicants must demonstrate English Language Proficiency for the purpose of admission if their first language (learned and understood) is not English.

Admission to Mount Royal is competitive, meaning students with higher grades will be considered first. Competitive and minimum grade requirements vary from program to program and from year to year based on the number of applicants. Your admission category will be determined by the Admissions and Recruitment Office once you have applied for admission and we have received your high school (secondary) and post-secondary (if applicable) grade and transcript information. Your admission category will determine which courses and grades will be used to calculate your competitive and final admission average. See the admission categories below to find out more about each type of applicant. Please read this carefully to ensure you are looking at the admission information which is relevant to your situation.

International applicants will be assessed for admission under the applicable admission category.

High school applicants: You will be considered a high school applicant if you are in your final year of high school if you have left or completed high school, and if you have completed fewer than eight post-secondary courses. Your competitive (conditional) admission average will be based on your top two Group A subjects.

Post-secondary applicants: You will be considered a post-secondary applicant if you have completed four or more post-secondary courses by Dec. 31 and will have completed eight or more post-secondary courses by June 30 (for the following Fall Semester). Your competitive (conditional) admission average will be based on your four most recently completed post-secondary courses as of Dec. 31 for the following Fall Semester. Courses presented for admission must be from an accredited post-secondary institution and must be transferable courses as determine by MRU.

Mature applicants: You will be considered a mature applicant if the previous categories do not apply to you and you are at least 21 years old by Sept. 1 (for the Fall Semester). Your competitive (conditional) admission average will be based on your top two Group A subjects.

Fall Semester (Sept. - Dec.):

Applications for admission to the Fall Semester will be considered from:

• International applicants living and applying from outside of Canada who requires a VISA/study permit
• International applicants currently studying in the English Language Program (ESL/EAL) at Mount Royal University
• International applicants currently studying at another institution in Canada
• International applicants who are living and working in Canada but are not a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident

Application period for International Students (October 1 - April 1)

Application Deadline - April 1
Document Deadline - May 1

You are strongly encouraged to apply and provide all final, official transcripts as soon as possible as many programs fill up quickly. The application deadline for international students is April 1. Please note that some programs have deadlines of February 1 and do not accept applications or documents beyond this date and other programs may become full and be removed from the application form any time after February 1.

Applicants must submit all supporting documents including final, official high school and post-secondary transcripts and proof of English Language Proficiency if your first language (learned and understood) is not English by May 1 to be considered for admission for the Fall Semester. If you are currently in high school or post-secondary studies and your final, official transcript will not be available by May 1, provide transcripts with interim grades so that you can be considered for conditional admission. This is to allow time to process your application and obtain a VISA/study permit. If you are granted a conditional offer of admission, your deadline for final documents may be extended.

United States: Citizens of the United States may apply and be considered under the standard dates and deadlines rather than the International deadlines.

Winter Semester (Jan - April):

Applications for admission to the Winter Semester will be considered from:

• International applicants currently studying in the Academic English program at Mount Royal University
• International applicants currently studying at another institution in Canada

A limited number of programs offer admission in the Winter Semester. See Programs Offered to see which programs take applications in the Winter Semester. Application for admission will not be considered for the Winter Semester from:

• International applicants living and applying from outside Canada
• International applicants within Canada who do not already possess a VISA/study permit

Spring Semester (May - June):

Applications for admission to the Spring Semester will be considered from:

• International applicants currently studying in the English Language Program at Mount Royal University
• International applicants currently studying at another institution in Canada

Open Studies is the only option available in the Spring Semester.

Summer Semester (July - August):

Mount Royal University does not currently have an intake into the Summer Semester.

When you apply for admission, final, official transcripts are required for all high school (secondary) and post-secondary coursework completed. Educational institutions (both high school [secondary] and post-secondary) are required to retain official transcripts for all students regardless of the length of time since your attendance at that school. For a transcript to be considered official, high school and post-secondary transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution to Mount Royal University.

If the original transcripts are not in English, you must submit both a certified English translation from a valid translation service and the translation service must attach a copy of the original transcripts and verify they are a true translation of the original.

Note: All documents (including transcripts) submitted for admission purposes become the property of Mount Royal and will not be released to, nor photocopied for, the applicant or anyone outside of Mount Royal. Documents submitted by applicants who are not accepted or who do not attend are destroyed one year after the start of the semester for which admission was requested.

Procedures for admission of applicants who are unable to get transcripts

Educational institutions (both high school [secondary] and post-secondary) are required to retain official transcripts for all students regardless of the length of time since your attendance at that school. Therefore, it is only in very rare circumstances that applicants are unable to obtain their official records.

If you are unable to arrange for official transcripts to be sent directly to Mount Royal University from the issuing institution, you may complete an Applicant Declaration form and provide the required documentation to demonstrate you have attempted to obtain your transcripts but were unable to get them. In cases where you were unable to arrange for official transcripts to be sent to Mount Royal, you may bring (or have someone else bring) that transcript to the Admissions and Recruitment Office (Room B156) on the Mount Royal University campus. We will take copies of the documents and return them to you directly. If only one official copy is available, do not send your official documents as they will not be returned to you.

Applicants who are unable to provide any official transcripts will be considered only for programs that have no specific academic requirements. An applicant seeking admission to a program with specific academic requirements must first present successful completion of these courses as well as meet the competitive and general admission requirements for their intended program of study.

Applicants who are unable to acquire one or more final, official transcript(s) to be sent directly to Mount Royal University from the issuing institution must provide:

• the Applicant Declaration form - regarding official transcripts
• academic documents you have in your possession (copies of original or unofficial)
• proof that you have tried to acquire your official transcript(s) including correspondence sent to the institution such as email requests, registered mail, institutional contact names and numbers
• written explanation of your circumstances indicating why you cannot obtain official transcripts
• list of all of your educational and work activities in chronological order since high school

The primary language of instruction and communication at Mount Royal University is English and it is essential that all students have adequate knowledge in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the English language to be successful in their studies. All applicants must demonstrate English Language Proficiency for the purpose of admission if their first language (learned and understood) is not English.

Documentation to verify English Language Proficiency is required for students whose first language is not English.
